Illinois lawmakers push revised property tax plan talks

In Springfield two top lawmakers moved to forge a bipartisan tax reform before the veto session ends. A Republican House plan approved 84 to 20 would freeze assessments for a year and swap exemptions for a 10 percent income tax credit while expanding homestead and senior exemptions. It would require votes for large levy increases and voter approval for major hikes. Critics warn such changes could hurt schools and local governments funded by the earlier income tax rise.
