Rochelle residents John Kenney and Ray Baker, two Rochelle men, survived a Cessna 140 emergency landing on Interstate 88 about two miles west of Illinois 251. No injuries or tickets were reported as police escorted the aircraft back to the Rochelle airport after a 45 minute flight.
A sewer backup crisis near the Jack Mabley Developmental Center may end today as contractors finish a sewage screening system. Officials say the system could prevent future backups in the area around Washington School and nearby homes on Sterling Avenue.
A Colombian Avianca Boeing 727 crashed shortly after takeoff from El Dorado Airport toward Cali, killing all 107 on board. Authorities and witnesses cited a possible drug cartel bombing by The Extraditables, with no survivors reported and wreckage scattering near Soacha.
A Hillcrest armed robbery at The Outer Limits tavern occurred about 7 p.m. Sunday with a masked gunman. The incident follows several similar robberies in Rochelle and nearby areas, with no injuries reported. Authorities suspect a seasonal rise and are investigating possible connections among cases.
In Gresham Oregon a robber snatched a Salvation Army kettle on Tim Ekloff’s first day collecting for the needy. Ekloff, 22, Portland, said the thief grabbed the kettle while he took a break and fled. Lt. Robert Sauders of the Gresham Corps noted the amount was unclear but a day after Thanksgiving is typically strong for donations.
