Northeastern quake rattles Canada and U S from Michigan to Maine

A 6.4 magnitude quake shook eastern Canada and the Northeast from Michigan to Maine, knocking out power and phones in much of Quebec and rattling high rises in Toronto and Ottawa. It was felt as far south as Washington and as far west as Sarnia, with no immediate heavy damage or serious injuries reported.

Borg-Warner to close Suburban research plant

Borg-Warner plans closing its Des Grae research center in the northwest suburb, a move said to cost 89 jobs and shift basic and product development to other facilities. Officials say the Dixon plant will see little to no impact, with work moved to Borg-Warner Automotive facilities after corporate restructuring and a 1987 corporate history noted.

Bush keeps Kennebunkport shopping with press in tow

George Bush spent a day in Kennebunkport shopping and greeting friends to show he will remain a good neighbor as president elect. His discreet motorcade drew about 15 press cars and some near misses behind the convoy. The transition crew pressed ahead with staffing moves, including Sununu naming pollster Robert Teeter as deputy chief of staff candidate. Bush and Barbara left Walker's Point to shop at The Tipsy Mouse for provisions for a midday gathering with reporters.

Fur protest on Fountain Square targets fur coats

On the busy shopping day, animal rights activists dumped simulated blood on donated fur coats, calling fur cruel. Jayn Meinhardt led the protest group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, urging donations and a boycott while coats were gathered for destruction and participants dressed as beavers and rabbits with anti fur signs.

Roh pledges reform and amnesty for Chun era crimes

South Korea's president Roh Tae-won urged forgiveness for Chun Doo Hwan and promised sweeping democratic reforms and amnesty for political prisoners. He backed investigations into wealth and corruption, compensation for victims, and civil rights restoration, while supporters pressed for Chun to testify to Parliament amid protests and rising criticism.
