Dixon observes Memorial Day with color guards and 1000 veterans
In Dixon on Memorial Day a ceremony began on the Peoria Avenue Bridge with a water wreath for sea veterans, honoring 47 men from the USS Iowa explosion. S.T. Stanley of VFW Post 540 led, with participation from VFW, Marine Corps League, American Legion and Viet Naw. A parade to Oakwood Cemetery featured the Dixon Municipal Band and Madison Junior High Patriots, plus Taps at the cemetery.

Illinois climber Jim Johnson 41 from Marengo and Colorado’s Howard Tuthill 31 survived a gust that tossed them from a tent at 16,400 feet on Mount McKinley. Frostbite and a broken vertebra for Johnson, rescued by helicopter after hours on a snow ledge.

Seven die on Illinois roads during long holiday weekend
United Press International reports seven fatalities on Illinois roads over the long weekend. A 6 year old Chicago boy, Jean Paul Hinton, ran into traffic beside a parked ice cream truck and died after a northbound car struck him near his south side home. No charges were filed against the driver. Earlier, 28 year old Roger Tangonan of Skokie died when brakes failed and his Mustang collided head on with another car in Des Plaines. passenger Pawela Czymanowski of Arlington Heights was hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
