Agency tightens plan for listeria in ready-to-eat meat
The government will test ready-to-eat meat and poultry more often for listeria monocytogenes and act tougher if contamination is found. The new policy follows the first U.S. illness linked to contaminated meat, a voluntary recall by a Texas company affecting 22 states. If contamination is found in a retail package, the entire lot will be recalled, and actions may be expanded after further testing. Listeria can grow at refrigerator temperatures, with meningitis or meningoencephalitis potential in vulnerable individuals.
