Students stroll toward the end of the school year as Dixon High School seniors set June 4 at 2 p.m. for commencement. The official Dixon public schools last day is June 5.
Thad M. O'Brien, 21, a Harmon volunteer fireman since the start of the year, is jailed on arson charges after a joint investigation tied him to two barn blazes. Authorities say one fire at Anna Lauterbach's Harmon Road barn and a second at Roy Hicks's rural Harmon barn were extinguished before spreading. O'Brien was arrested Tuesday night and held without bond awaiting arraignment.
Former President Ronald Reagan flew low over Dixon at 12 000 feet on his Chicago bound trip from a National Restaurant Association event. His plane circled the town for five to seven minutes with Reagan reminiscing about boyhood days as the arch and island near the dam passed by. Nancy Reagan did not accompany him and organizers hope for a July parade appearance in Dixon though no word on Fourth of July plans was provided.
Speaker Jim Wright faced a pivotal ethics committee decision on dismissing key charges. At Tuesday’s hearing Wright’s lawyers urged dismissal while special counsel argued against. Wright watched from his office as his wife Betty sat in the front row. Rep. Torricelli urged dismissal to restore public trust. Houston attorney Susman warned Wright’s career is at risk before due process. The panel met in session to decide, with resignation rumors looming if dismissal fails.
Washington UPI The Population Reference Bureau reports the world population at 5.234 billion, up 0.25 billion since hitting 5 billion two years ago. Demographers foresee the sixth billion possibly reached in about a decade as growth remains high at 1.8 percent annually.
Rochelle The night a bullet ripped into Jose Rangel is memory as the District 15 State Trooper prepares to return to work May 30. Rangel, 34, spent six months recovering from critical abdomen wounds after a Nov 16, 1988 traffic stop near the Belvidere Toll Plaza.
State trooper Still remains bullet lodged in his back after a shooting nearly cost him his life. He will start administrative duties for two to three months and review six months of law changes before potentially returning to road patrol. Despite surgeries and weight loss, he values time at home with wife Beth, 27, son Anthony, 3, and baby Alicia, 4 months.
