Illinois eyes 6 cent gas tax hike for roads and transit

Transportation Secretary Greg Baise proposes a 6 cent per gallon increase in Illinois gasoline tax, paired with $1 billion in bonding to raise about $2 billion for road and mass transit projects over five years. The plan would lift the tax from 13 to 19 cents, cost the average driver about $31 extra annually, and directs funds to local governments and mass transit, with a draft five-year program due next week.

Judge lengthens North jury day in Iran Contra trial

U.S. District Judge Gerhard Gesell broadens jurors’ hours in the Oliver North case to accelerate deliberations. The panel of nine women and three men has weighed charges including lying to Congress and tax fraud, with potential penalties up to 60 years and 3 million dollars. The jurors have been sequestered in Washington since April 20 as exhibits and testimony were reviewed.

Education in U S stagnation prompts call for reform

Washington reports a UPI overview of the sixth annual Wall Chart on U S education showing SAT scores down to 904 from 906 and graduation rates falling to 71.1 percent. Education Secretary Cavazos urged nationwide goals to raise high school graduation to 90 percent, cut grade retentions, boost attendance and reduce teacher paperwork. He warned the nation must act or risk decline.

Amboy honors Kellen for 50 years of service

Amboy city leaders honored Alderman Lester Kellen at a council meeting for over four decades of service to Amboy. The 81 year old, who began serving in 1943, will reach 50 years in his current term. He also serves as Streets and Alleys commissioner and remains active on the fire department.

Nicaraguan refugee wins Florida lottery

In Miami a Nicaraguan refugee who shared half of the 10.6 million Florida Lotto jackpot was granted political asylum by the INS. Perry Rivkind, district director, stated he acted quickly after erroneous reports that the asylum request was denied. Samarriba-Perez served with the Sandinista Department of Education but refused propaganda and sought asylum in the United States.
