Walnut voters to decide on 55 cent tax increase

Walnut residents face a renewed referendum to raise educational and operations taxes by 55 cents per 100 assessed valuation for both Walnut High School District 508 and Grade School District 285. After November defeats, budgets were slashed including teaching positions and extracurriculars, prompting a SOS campaign to inform citizens.

Reagan subpoena quashed in North trial ruling

UPI reports Judge Gerhard Gesell blocked former President Reagan from testifying at Oliver Norths trial. The ruling said North failed to show a necessary need for Reagan appearance. North faces 12 felonies including lying to Congress and tax fraud with potential 60 years and 3 million dollars in fines.

Bennett motion to withdraw guilty plea seeks trial

Kathy Joanne Bennett 25 of Earlville has an amended motion asking Lee County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Hornsby to permit withdrawal of her guilty plea to first degree murder and proceed to trial. Special counsel Rolfe Ehrmann argues she was fearful and misled by a promised leniency and that the plea was not properly informed. The judge will hear the motion at 2:30 p.m. Monday.

Amboy mayoral race pits McCracken against Gehant

Two contenders vie for Amboy's top job in an election denying acrimony. Spitak Quake Rocks Armenian Countryside Again

Tass reported a strong quake near Spitak Armenia measuring 7.5 on the Mercalli scale. No casualties were listed though earlier quakes devastated Spitak killing thousands and destroying buildings in the Gukasyan district where 270 cattle died. Soviet officials say about 25 000 bodies recovered with up to 50 000 feared dead overall.

Exxon captain fired after Alaska oil spill and FBI probe

Exxon USA fired Captain Joseph Hazelwood after the tanker spill released 11 million gallons of crude in Valdez Alaska. The FBI began an inquiry into possible Clean Water Act violations while biologists reported wildlife tolls including hundreds of birds coated in tar.
