An actor in a top hat reenacted Gustave Eiffel’s 1889 climb of the tower, reaching the top in just over an hour with about 30 performers in period dress. At the summit he raised the French flag as a 21 gun salute and confetti shower celebrated the centennial.
UPI reports American farmers plan large expansions in corn soybeans and wheat acreage this year due to high prices after last year’s drought. Iowa and Illinois expect 1 million extra corn acres each, lifting national corn to 73.3 million acres, with soybeans up 5 percent to 61.7 million and wheat up 13 percent to 74.3 million. Cotton acreage falls, record American Pima planned.
President Bush named Teddy Roosevelt Dwight Eisenhower and Harry Truman as figures of action and honesty while praising Ronald Reagan as an uncomplaining leader who stood by principles and left office with broad public approval. He also noted Lincoln and Hoover in discussion of great presidents.
Northern Illinois University official Tom Montiegel jokes about a leveraged buyout of the state funded university on April Fool's Day citing chronic funding shortfalls. He says shareholders would be Illinois residents and notes Gov Thompson and the General Assembly have resisted tax increases for education. He adds other public schools might follow if successful.
NEW YORK UPI Deliveries of Alaska oil will be delayed until at least next week due to cleanup of last week's spill the largest in U.S. history. Coast Guard Lt Cmdr Jim Simpson said deliveries are limited to daylight hours and tankers move in one direction at a time with traffic about half its normal flow of three or four tankers daily.
