Alaska oil spill grows worse in Valdez

Governor Cowper appealed to President Bush for federal aid as the Exxon Valdez spill widens from 11 million to 30 miles by 10 miles and then to 100 square miles. Officials blamed the uncertified third mate for navigation as 50 square miles of pristine Prince William Sound and wildlife including sea otters and birds faced contamination. Authorities prepared booms and burn plans amid 30 mph winds while questions swirled over Exxon liability and federal response.

Eldena Boy Trampled by Cattle Near Home

A three year old Eldena boy, Shane Hecker, suffered a broken leg after being trampled by cattle Saturday morning near his home. Deputies found him in a pen with a bull, and the boy was taken to KSB Hospital in good condition. Deputies Tom Lehman, Diana Johnson and Mike Donoho were commended for guarding the injured boy amid tense moments as the bull charged.

Bennett seeks to withdraw guilty plea in murder case

Kathy Joanne Bennett 25 of Earlville asked Lee County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Hornsby to withdraw her Feb 15 guilty plea to first degree murder and to replace Public Defender David Fritts. She accuses Fritts of coercion and seeks new counsel, with a hearing set for Monday at 2:30 p.m. Co-defendant Calvin Pierce, 30, Earlville, faces trial April 18 on seven counts of murder for the same beating and stabbing death of Carrie Dun can on Angling Road near Paw Paw.

SVCC student from Ohio killed in Illinois crash

Principal victims were Mary Duffy a 19 year old Sauk Valley Community College freshman and Jonathon Pia also 19 of Sheffield who died after a semi rear ended the car they rode in on Illinois Route 88 near Princeton. Driver Mark Franklin 19 and another passenger Benjamin Atkinson 19 survived in good condition. truck driver Terry Trueblood 24 was cited for following too closely.
