Arafat Signals PLO Will Not Halt Raids in Talks
In Tunis, PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat refused a U.S. demand to curb cross border raids on Israel while stressing the Israeli army's actions in Lebanon. U.S. envoy Robert Pelletreau termed talks with PLO officials as producing a new dynamic that could lead to direct Israeli Palestinian talks if violence declines. Arafat wore battle fatigues and spoke after a five hour meeting with Pelletreau and PLO executive member Yasser Abed Rabbo and expressed mutual intent to drive the dialogue to success.
