Rejected Tower Returns Home After Senate Defeat

Former senator John Tower flew back to Texas after the Senate rejected his Pentagon bid 53 to 47 amid sharp debate. President Bush said Tower faced a cruel ordeal and began seeking a replacement, with a new nominee possible by Saturday though confirmation before April was unlikely. Tower, 63, was the first ex-senator denied a Cabinet post, noted for decades on the Armed Services Committee and Iran-Contra involvement, though accusations of drinking and womanizing and conflicts of interest clouded his bid.

Joliet Couple’s 224 Acre Rezoning Bid Fails

The Lee County Zoning Board of Appeals deadlocked on a 3 to 1 vote to rezone 224 acres near the Dixon Tollway Industrial Park from agricultural to heavy industrial. With one member absent, the measure needed all four present for approval and failed as Eugene Koehler voted against. The plan now goes to the Lee County Board for a March 21 vote, where a simple majority could pass.

LaGow defense says ISP set him up in drug case

LaGow's lawyer opened the Lee County Circuit Court case arguing an Illinois State Police paid informant enticed him into drug sales and then kept the $300 after passing drugs to an undercover officer. The attorney depicted LaGow as a high school dropout who had long substance use and alcohol issues while the informant, now unavailable, allegedly aided multiple buys. Prosecutor counters the informant helped officers obtain cocaine in the purchases. Jury selection ran from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and hearings pause for final arguments and verdict on Saturday.
