Illinois budget salvo boosts education funding and adds state projects

The plan increases education funding with about $3 billion for grade and high schools and $1.5 billion for colleges, though Thompson says requests justify more without an income tax hike. The budget also calls for expanded addiction services, CHIP coverage for about 3,800, child welfare grants, a Moscow trade office, and 39 expanded or new recreation sites. Prison expansions, youth centers upgrades, $92 million for psychiatric patient moves, 25 million for anti drug efforts, 450 patrol cars, and an animal disease lab in Galesburg are included.
