Bill to raise compulsory school age headed for talks
The bill would lift the compulsory school age from 16 to 18 and heads to a House Senate conference committee after lawmakers failed to agree on a House amendment. If not backed, the conference will hammer out terms with a final vote possible by week’s end. The amendment would exempt truancy alternative education programs from mandatory attendance, potentially affecting 8,000 students and adding about 12 million dollars to state costs. Senator Jack Shaffer urged approval, saying a high school diploma is crucial for future prospects.
