Golf ball may have saved life at Memphis course
Oliver Anthony of Memphis says a spare golf ball in his pocket stopped a robber’s bullet on the eighth green of Davy Crockett Golf Course. He and his wife fled to the clubhouse, noting a bullet hole in his pocket and a ball with the bullet still inside. The doctor said timely care prevented serious injury.

Madigan plan resurfaces as Illinois tax hike looms
State Rep. Myron Olson says the Madigan income tax plan will reappear in the Senate around 2 p.m. Friday with Senate President Rock expected to mobilize votes to revive the measure defeated last week. The plan would raise 726 million over two years for education and local governments. Olson also notes possible votes on a gas tax gradual hike and higher cigarette taxes, plus a $3 million Dixon Theatre renovation bill ahead of adjournment by midnight Friday.

Riverboat gambling bill may resurface in Illinois
SPRINGFIELD UPI A revised bill authorizing riverboat gambling could be introduced in the Illinois House this week. Rep. E J Giorgi said he is coordinating with Gov. Thompson to present a plan on Thursday or Friday. The measure would authorize 10 floating casinos under a state gaming board, with board salaries and changes to Revenue Department control.
