Former Hungarian leader Kadar dies at 77
Janos Kadar, who led Hungary under a Soviet installed regime after the 1956 uprising, died after a prolonged illness at 77. He was ousted as Communist Party leader in May 1988 and replaced by Karoly Grosz, later removed from his ceremonial post as health declined. His rule saw economic vitality and relative cultural liberty within the Soviet bloc. Meanwhile in Panama City Panamanians blocked Fort Clayton entrance briefly in protest of U.S. military actions near the canal, prompting a wary response from MPs as Foreign Minister Chiari denounced alleged intimidation and sought an OAS protest.
