Reagan sends sympathy to Candy Helin family in Panama death

Former President Ronald Reagan sent a heartfelt sympathy letter to Candy Helin's family after she was killed by Panamanian forces on December 20 near Balboa. The note, addressed to her husband Steve Helin’s sister, was delivered via Jane Sheaffer who spoke with Marlin Misner of the Reagan foundation. Memorials and a Florida State University Gifted and Talented scholarship fund honor Candy, who taught in the Balboa Department of Defense schools. Memorial services were held in Ancon Panama with a ceremony attended by about 400 people.

Brayton bus loading continues in front of Mount Morris High

Mount Morris district will keep loading students on Brayton Road in front of the high school despite village complaints. Superintendent Ed Olds cites state stop arm rules and notes loading in back or in junior high parking is not feasible. Board members report waits around six minutes, while villagers say up to 15 minutes. The district may reassess options but currently maintains front-loading as the only viable approach.
