Reagan Day bill flies high in Illinois House

Illinois House adopted HJR-81 declaring February 6 1990 as President Ronald Reagan Day. Senate expected to pass. Rep Myron Olson led the measure at the request of Marlin Misner of the Reagan Home Preservation Foundation. Senator Harlan Rigney said Senate approval was likely the same day. Reagan, born in Illinois, turned 79 and residents were urged to visit Dixon to see his midwestern values.

Northwest Floods Strike Washington and Oregon

A carpet of flood waters covered southwest Washington and northern Oregon forcing about 3000 people to flee. Sheriff Morrissette called it potentially the worst flooding since the 1930s as at least three deaths were reported in Washington and two in Oregon. Bodies were found in flood waters, and a car swamped on I-5 south of Centralia contributed to the toll while another man drowned in his car north of Tacoma.

Illinois Governor Thompson touts 14 years in office in State of the State

Governor James Thompson delivered a 75 minute State of the State address in Springfield, recapping accomplishments since 1977 and signaling new programs to wait until March. He warned lawmakers of difficult decisions on environment education funding and the budget, emphasized fiscal restraint and local control concerns, and highlighted welfare to work initiatives and tax cuts while noting continued opposition to tax increases.
