North’s lawyers seek dismissal over classified info handling

Oliver North’s defense Tuesday asked Judge Gerhard Gesell to dismiss the case, accusing prosecutors of misconduct in handling state secrets. The judge paused the trial to review the new crisis involving 18 public documents previously treated as classified, with further hearings planned on the matter.

Festival invites Reagan as grand marshal for Dixon Petunia Festival

Former President Ronald Reagan may serve as grand marshal for the 1989 Dixon Petunia Festival celebrating its Silver Anniversary. The July 2 parade at 2 p.m. has theme 25 Years of Memories with co chairmen Ed Bushman and Rita Crundwell hopeful for attendance and inviting civic groups to participate by June 1.

Work on city bridge scheduled

Telegraph reports IDOT plans a Wednesday bridge reconstruction on South Galena Avenue at U. Route 26 crossing the railroad, with six concrete beams set between 9 am and 3 pm weather permitting. Route 26 will close about 15 minutes per beam. flagmen will direct traffic. Completion eyed for Oct 15, 1989. Bob Proprietor Construction Co of Sterling is prime contractor on a $3,016,000 project.

SVCC committee studies easement for ambulatory surgery center

A SVCC board committee including an outside attorney will study granting an easement to Dr. David Peterson to build an ambulatory surgery center east of Sauk Valley Community College. Meetings open to the public with Behrendt, Anderson, McDonald and Reese to discuss the proposal and potential dorm plans.

Oregon City Hall to get clock pageant in sesquicentennial year

Mayor Jim Barnes told the city council a six inch aluminum clock donated by the Oregon Sesquicentennial Committee will arrive in 60 days. The clock cost nearly $15 000 and funds leftover may be donated to the city. The clock will be mounted on Third Street facing north and south with a plaque noting the donor. Oregon celebrated its sesquicentennial in 1986 and the clock style echoes the city hall lamps.

District 271 ratifies new teachers contract after long talks

The Lee Center District 271 Board of Education unanimously approved a three year contract with district teachers after nearly 10 months of negotiations. Base pay rises to 141,200 next year with 100, 200 increases in the following two years. The plan adds retirement contributions, higher insurance deductibles, a cafeteria option, and optional coverage.
