Paw Paw girl dies in blaze

A 10 year old rural Earlville girl Dusty Lynn Wright died early today in a house fire four miles south of Paw Paw in Lee County. The fire at 3208 Welland Road started about 12:33 a.m. and was blamed on an overloaded electrical circuit in the bedroom. The girl's stepmother and a younger brother escaped. Father arrived, rescued her from the room, and attempted CPR before she was taken to Mendota Community Hospital where she died at 1:05 a.m. Investigators from the state fire marshal sheriff and coroner offices are investigating and funeral arrangements are pending.

One in five Illinois districts on state watch list

SPRINGFIELD Ill UPD One in every five Illinois public grade and high school districts are being monitored by the state for money troubles. The State Board of Education said 198 of 972 districts are near or have exhausted their funds. Ninety one districts are new to the list this year, while others improved, a net gain of 43. Eight districts are so strained they may lose state aid. Notable on the list are Ohio Walnut Dixon districts, with many in rural areas or small towns.

City crews clear Dixon Street after weekend snowstorm

Street crews remove snow from city thoroughfares today after weekend snowfall. Street Commissioner Marilyn Coffey said crews are pushing snow back and removing it from various streets.

Dixon council rejects museum plan and approves zoning

The Dixon City Council informally rejected acquiring the Marion Ackert home at 812 W. First St as a museum citing renovation costs and limited funds for maintenance. The council also approved rezoning at 1401 W. Fourth St for a Stop-N-Go gas station and convenience store.

Pay raise rejected by House in 380 to 48 vote

The House rejected a 45 500 pay raise for Congress and top officials by 380 to 48. The move sends the measure back to the Senate after political pressure and public protests, with a likely Senate rejection to kill the automatic hike. President Bush said he would abide by Congress but had supported the raise to attract talent and retain judges.

Bargaining Resumes At Lee Center School District

Negotiations begin at 5 p.m. with the Lee Center School District and Illinois Education Association. Dave Smith says a contract is hoped tonight and the union may strike if demands are not met. The IEA represents 54 teachers. the pay gap is $1,400 over three years versus a $700 offer.

Bush unveils S and L bailout plan in new rescue effort

President Bush announced a 90 billion dollar plan to rescue ailing savings and loans, proposing a new Resolution Trust Corp to sell 50 billion in bonds, 40 billion already spent by regulators, with taxpayers bearing about 39.9 billion in interest over ten years and the rest borne by banks and thrifts through higher insurance fees. He urged punishment for those behind the crisis, citing risk taking, fraud, and criminality as core causes.
