Judge orders fitness hearing for convicted killer
Coles County Circuit Judge Paul Kamada on Friday ordered Herbert R. Whitlock to undergo psychiatric testing after a 30 minute hearing on whether Whitlock's court appointed attorney Karen Burkybile should withdraw. Whitlock is serving life for the July 8 1986 stabbing death of Karen Spesard Rhoades and her husband Duke. Steidl, Whitlock's Paris co defendant, received a death sentence for the murders. Written arguments are due by January 31 1990 and Kamada plans a written opinion on the petition.

DeLeo Pleads Guilty To Minor Tax Charge
Chicago Democrat State Rep. James DeLeo pleaded guilty to a minor tax violation on a 1982 federal return. Prosecutors dropped more serious charges from the Greylord investigation. DeLeo, 38, faces up to one year in prison and a $25,000 fine for declaring an improper $360 deduction.
