Humboldt wildlife habitat study prompts cautious recovery
In Humboldt County Iowa during the 1960s wild game thrived but by the 1970s farming expanded to about 97 percent of the county. A dramatic drop in pheasants sparked a landowner biologist dispute that led to farmers leaving seven corn plots per township and feeding cover crops. The DNR offered 70 per acre compensation with a five year target of at least five hens per square mile.

Pheasant Study Shows Habitat Changes Boost Wild Bird Numbers
The Outdoorsman reports a multi year pheasant study on farms showing that permanent and temporary habitat, food plots, and water sources increase bird numbers. Small plots under 3 5 acres are less effective unless linked by fences or woody cover. larger 10 15 acre plots perform better. A 50 acre sorghum plot yielded 200 pheasants plus other wildlife. Contact Pheasants Forever to aid wildlife on private ground. Have a Merry Christmas.
