Ukrainian woman jailed under AIDS law in Moscow
A 31-year-old woman received four years in prison under an August 1987 decree for knowingly spreading AIDS to sexual partners. The case, reported by a Soviet newspaper, is among the first under the new anti AIDS law granting police powers to detain carriers and punish spreaders. Health officials cite over 300 confirmed Soviet AIDS cases, many among foreign students.
