The Bush administration plans a new drug war strategy targeting mid level figures such as pilots and money handlers to curb imports and coca cultivation. The New York Times says details will be outlined in a forthcoming broadcast.
A federal judge committed Jim Bakker to a psychiatric hospital after a psychiatrist testified he suffers from hallucinations and acute depression. Dr. Basil Jackson described Bakker as lying on the floor in a fetal position and under severe psychotic distress. The judge sent him to the Butner Psychiatric Institute while the fraud trial continues.
Dixon teachers went back to the classrooms this week without a new contract. The last contract expired June 30 and the district faces a about $2.4 million deficit. Negotiations proceed under a gag rule limiting details while a state funding outlook and summer schedules complicate talks.
A construction bridge on the Baltimore Washington Parkway Route 198 collapsed during morning rush hour injuring at least 14 people, seven construction workers and five motorists. Police closed the southbound lanes backing up traffic three miles as Gov. Schaefer visited the scene.

In the Great Lakes area 2.9 million motorists are expected, representing seven percent of the population.
