Nationwide phone strike disrupts 20 states and key tensions

The Communications Workers of America and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers struck Bell Atlantic NYNEX and Pacific Telesis on August 6. About 35,000 Ameritech workers walked off in five Midwest states. Vandalism and a bomb threat are investigated in New York as the walkout nears day nine with 189,000 on strike nationwide. Local Centel and Illinois Bell guidance says service remains largely intact except longer directory assistance delays.

Dixon Library wins big grant to broaden rural service

The Dixon Public Library received 45,636 to expand outreach within Dixon School District 170. Northern Illinois Library System adds 8,741 for a total grant aiding 6,761 rural residents who would gain free non resident cards through June 1990. The funds fund new materials and a widened business section including Moody's services, plus video projection gear and an old fashioned Saturday matinee.

Bush pledges to use force if needed on hostages

President Bush said he would use military action to free American hostages in Lebanon if a safe method existed and could avoid harming innocents. He noted limited progress due to scarce intelligence and warned signals from Iran complicate hopes for rescue or retaliation while vowing continued effort.

Lunar eclipse to dazzle Illinois Wednesday skies

Chicago reports a full moon and clear skies for the area’s first total lunar eclipse in seven years. Adler Planetarium expert James Sweitzer calls it a cosmic event, noting the moon will turn reddish during totality and remain visible for about 90 minutes.

Kreider to Build 15-Bed Ashton Home for Disabled

Kreider Services plans a 15 bed facility in Ashton to aid developmentally disabled residents. The project, part of a county wide expansion, includes Franklin Grove and Amboy homes with bids in about 120 days. Funding via Illinois Department of Public Aid and oversight by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Governor Blames Local Governments for Rising Property Taxes

Gov James R Thomson accused local governments of hiking property taxes through higher spending and urged taxpayers to press local officials rather than Springfield. He cautioned that some relief plans merely shift the burden and endorsed a referendum requirement if local tax bodies plan spending increases above five percent.
