Chili Cookoff Raises 8500 for Muscular Dystrophy
More than 8500 dollars was raised at the 10th Annual Budweiser Chili Cookoff for Muscular Dystrophy at Plum Hollow Lanes. About 2500 attendees toured 31 chili varieties from Dixon area teams as trophies were awarded for best recipe and showmanship. John Weston of Springfield won a trip for two to Las Vegas. the Jerry Lewis Award went to Raynor Garage Doors for most donations.

Bush signs $897 million drought aid for farmers
President Bush signed a $897 million disaster aid package to help farmers exposed to drought in the Wheat Belt and floods in cotton country. The measure uses a four tier loss system with a $100,000 cap per farmer and excludes those with more than $2 million gross income. Payments expected this fall after regulations are written.

Two Die In Weekend Area Traffic Crashes
A weekend pair of crashes claimed two lives in Illinois and adjacent rural areas. An 11 year old Oregon rider Jeffrey Lynch died after being struck on Route 64 near Mount Morris by teen driver Lyle Brandon. In a separate incident James Hammer of Forreston died after stepping onto Route 72 and colliding with a car driven by Rick Rucker. Dennis Lower of Leaf River survived serious injuries. Authorities noted no citations were issued and investigations continue.
