Hunter Meets Bear On Mountain Trail
Howe returned Tuesday from a hunting trip in the Eastside hills with Morris-Hartwig at the old Berber ranch. On the last day a large black bear charged the trail as Howe blocked its path. The bear lumbered forward, halted only when a rifle cartridge clicked, then stood eyeing Howe in the brush.

In a tense moment a hunter named Howe and a bear faced each other for a full minute before the bear turned away. Howe fired repeatedly until the rifle magazine ran dry. Hartwig arrived too late to bag the largest black bear in the eastern hills, which remains at large near the Beebe ranch as huckleberry pickers are warned. Chas Persico and his wife visited Ukiah late last week.
