Masquerade a big success at Cleland hall Ukiah Fire Dept event
A large crowd attended last Wednesday’s masquerade at Cleland’s hall as the Ukiah Fire Department bid farewell to the old year and welcomed the new. More than 60 couples in costumes danced after unmasking, with decorations by Sid Henley and dramatic red U F D letters by Oscar Hargis and Clair Hufft. Master of ceremonies Don Gaspar de Porola, with Chiefs Barker and Van Joost assisting, presided until 11 pm. Prizes honored many costumes from Lady Diana to Japanese Lady, Domino characters, and a moonlight confetti dance marked by lively dancing and a festive mood for next year’s event.

Death of T. B. Rawles in San Francisco
Thomas Be Rawles died in San Francisco on December 24. His remains were brought to Boonville for interment. A pioneer of Anderson valley he was about 16 years old and longtime sheepman who moved to Ukiah. A republican political figure, he ran for assessor in 1886 and remained active until recent illness. He leaves a widow and three children, Mattie Rhodes E C and Leslie Rawles.

New Law Requires Front and Rear Auto Plates
Autoists are notified that a new law to take effect January 1 requires two license plates on each vehicle one at the front and one at the rear. Plates, white on red, about six inches high, must be over 16 inches from the ground and the taillight must illuminate the rear plate. State furnishes plates. owners pay expressage.
Redwood Valley Basket Social Draws County Visitors
Redwood Valley residents enjoyed a basket social and dance in the schoolhouse last Saturday. Invites were issued to Ukiah visitors and attendees reported a good time. A basket from the Finn colony sold for over $13 and about $75 was cleared for the Redwood Valley Improvement club’s use.

Grapes Growers Form Local Anti Amendment Group
The grape growers met last Saturday in the courthouse to form a permanent organization to oppose a proposed constitutional amendment legalizing alcohol manufacture sale or transport. Fred Waugh was elected chairman and C K Crawford secretary. Executive committees were named for Ukiah Calpella and Nopland with several members appointed. A resolution declared the group’s purpose to fight the amendment.

Peoples and McIntosh Plead to Two Charges
In Superior Court Tuesday the cases People v Frank Peoples and People v Robert McIntosh were heard. Both defendants faced murder for Getz’s death and attempted murder for the assault on Droege and Ullley.
