Alfalfa cutting and hog feed yields for Tennessee farmers
In Prairie Farmer answers to Mr. Mills, alfalfa should be cut at blooming to keep hog pasture healthy and to encourage new sprouts. Pig weight gains per ton of alfalfa hay vary: late cut hay with leaf loss yields about 333 pounds of pork per ton, while earlier cut hay with leaves intact yields about 868 pounds. Best results occur when cut when one tenth of blooms are seen. The piece also notes a 890 pound gross, 776 pound net Robertson county hog and discusses brood sows and efficient feeding for profitable pork.
