Death of Pioneer William McIntosh Stuns Ryan Canyon Residents

Great State Reception for Returning Volunteers in Butte

Alvin DeWitt Granted Discharge in Montana Case

Alvin DeWitt is discharged from all further prosecution for the killing of Wm McIntosh after a coroner's inquest and a Montana court order. Justice Vermillion released him without bail on September 11 1899 in Dillon following the county attorney's motion and finding of no guilt.

Nerve Never Left Him as Joseph Allen Faces Death

Helena dispatch reports Joseph H. Allen, a 21 year old quarter blood Indian, was hanged at the Lewis and Clark county jail at 6 06 am for the murder of J B Reynolds in June 1898. About 50 witnesses saw the swift execution after a prior self defense claim failed. The prior trial and appeal ended with a death sentence.

Not a Vacant House in Dillon Hurts Local Normal Attendance

The passage notes no vacant dwelling or business house exists in Dillon though several have been built this season. Houses under construction are fully used and fear grows that without more housing the Normal will face serious attendance disruption as room shortages bite students. Students often choose boarding and rooming with themselves, and a large dormitory will eventually be needed by the Normal board.
