The Eliel Brothers firm marks its forty seventh year in Dillon with a history spanning from early pioneer trade to a substantial and reliable business. Leonard Eliel and Lambert built the enterprise, joined by Adolph, as Utah and Northern railroad expansion shaped their growth. The early store started small but earned steady patronage. A Dillon city hall meeting on Monday formed a radio club for local listeners. Temporary officers C W Obrem as chairman, Dr M A Walker as secretary, and W A Graeter as treasurer were elected with a $1 entrance fee and dues to be set later. The group aims to include all area radio listeners and improve the sound of broadcasts.
Joseph Adam directing the Montana Symphony Orchestra announces the planned Montana tour is canceled because expenses cannot be met. The move follows a mixed response during the second season with lack of cooperation and interest cited, though Adam still supports a state orchestra concept for a future revival.
Beaverhead chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held a commemorative gathering at Lovers Loop to mark the explorers Ryer Lewis and Clark. A marker was placed on a rocky promontory near Beaverhead River reflecting their August journey. A program followed with songs, diary extracts, and readings about Beaverhead valley life in 1857.
The Dillon Bagdad temple delegation returned from the El Korah ceremony in Boise with a report of a successful meeting. Members making the special car trip included J. S. Baker and others. 600 attended the banquet. A large forest of petrified wood was found in a remote Texas valley.
Frank Andrew Bryan, a well known Melrose rancher, died after his horse fell with him near a Dewey area. He and companion Charles Coanwarher rode from a Chris Snyder ranch auction and hit a fence, fracturing his skull and dying about four hours later.
Lewis A. Penwell, president of the Cooperative Sheep Company, placed the last 20 000 sheep on shares within a 75 mile radius of Butte creating a spring lamb and wool crop valued around 200 000 dollars. The two year old company paid 26 percent dividends this year and expects higher next year. Principal stockholders include Senator T J Walsh and B K Wheeler, Congressman John M Sivans, Governor J J Erickson, State Treasurer William I Harmon and bank presidents from Helena Townsend Twin Bridges and Dillon. Capital stock stood at 260 000 dollars. underwriting completed for this year with plans to expand territory next year.
Warren Sutherland a Dillon police force member, returned home after a wedding in Pickens on October 18 to wed Miss Jennie Winchester of a prominent Pickens family. The couple plan to reside in Dillon and Sutherland reports strong Southern business and above average crops during his travels. A brief note adds a Spanish nobleman seeking nicotine stain protection credited with inventing cigar paper bands.
The second biennial District No. 2 Montana Federation of Women’s clubs met at St James guild hall on October 27 with delegates from all clubs. Mrs. J. M. Keith opened, Miss Jean Bishop led the invocation, and the glee club from Montana State Normal College sang two selections. Speakers included Mrs. S. E. Davis, Mrs. Ted Woodward, and state president Mrs. C. D. Wiggenhorn outlining organized effort and federation aims. The luncheon followed at Mrs. J. Holtz’s home then adjourned for noon recess.
Sixteen Dillon Rotary members drove to Anaconda on Monday bearing the bronze Rotary emblem for its statewide tour. At the Montana hotel a banquet and formal presentation to the Anaconda club were led by District Governor Frank Hazelbaker with remarks by Rev I X Lerchner and A T Peterson. The Dillon quartet Lesehner Stephan Peterson and Loft performed multiple numbers.
