Close of 1911 Fire Season on Beaverhead Forest
The Beaverhead National Forest ends its 1911 fire season with seven fires found and fought, only one causing serious damage. The largest blaze began near the Goldstone Mine in Idaho, crossed the Continental Divide into Montana, burned about 105 acres and felled roughly 15,000 feet of timber before control. Aged lessons from 1910 prompted extended trails and roads, three bridges across Wise River, a 16-ranger riding patrol, and a Bald Mountain lookout to aid rapid discovery and communication with Dillon by telephone.
