Fire at Northwestern mine in Red Lodge claims nine lives
Fire broke out in the Northwestern Improvement company coal mine at Red Lodge last Friday morning. Investigation points to incendiaries as the cause. The blaze began in a large log crib and produced such heat and smoke that escape was impossible for many workers. Doubling efforts by mine officers saved numerous others as gases filled No 2 shaft. Only nine miners died after a full employee sweep of the east side mine.
