Beaverhead County Commissioners Meet in Regular Session 1919

Beaverhead County Montana Board of County Commissioners met November 8 1919 with D D McKnight D M Best and Vera M Baker present. Minutes approved. W S Tash road petition deferred. claims audited. adjourned to November 4 1919 then reconvened. Nicholia Precinct No 24 created from Dell Precinct No 5. Road record to be prepared for December. October payroll $2693.64 audited. Bids invited for groceries for Poor Farm and county poor. Medical attendance bids sought for sick and infirm inmates. Various warrants approved for clerical, advertising, postage, treasury assistants, printing, telephones, supplies, deputy sheriffs, mileage, and other expenses.

Skating Rink Planned at the Fair Grounds by Legion

American Legion skating rink committee began construction at the county fair grounds using a donated Caterpillar tractor. The rink will be run by the Legion in winter with season tickets for Dillon residents and students and separate admission for others. Jesse Gray to oversee the rink. flooding started Wednesday night. Funds listed include maintenance, supplies, and road work for local projects.

Beaverhead Beaten by Anaconda 60 to 6 in Football Clash

Beaverhead County High School lost decisively to Anaconda, 60 to 6, as Anaconda opened with shifting formations that overwhelmed the local squad. Despite the defeat, the Beaverhead players gained valuable experience in a game where offense and defense struggled, unlike their earlier matchups with Butte teams.

Night and day drilling uses an up-to-date plant and geologists approve the site as Musselshell oil finds draw interest. Stockholders report satisfaction with limited public funding and expect results by January.

May Wave Landing Field for Airplanes at Dillon

J. W. Hesser of Inland Empire Aerial Training and J. W. White of Twin Bridges plan a Dillon landing field. They interviewed local business leaders and expect to return to finalize plans for passenger and mail service from Butte via the Jefferson and Madison valleys. Both men are former army aviators who performed flights at the Madison county fair.

November District Court session opens with multiple trials

Judge Joseph C. Smith presided as James Jenkins admitted guilt for liquor violations and received a $50 fine and 15 days in jail. Pat Layden was found guilty of destroying a fence and fined $200. William T. Benning faced a cattle rustling related case with witnesses from the state penitentary and a Milwaukee detective testifying as the trial proceeded. Richard Anderson was later charged with grand larceny for looting a cabin at Dell last April.

Legion Service Impresses Beaverhead Post at Dillon

American Legion members from Beaverhead Post attended a Sunday service at the Methodist church in Dillon. Rev. H G Humphrey led a program with addresses from Mayor J E Monroe Prof J B Cluley and President Davis plus a stirring sermon on unity and postwar Americanism.

Census Takers Sought for Beaverhead County Jobs

Nine enumerators are needed for Beaverhead County during the January 1920 census. Both men and women 18 to 70 may apply, with daily pay of 4 to 6 dollars. Applications are invited at once, with James W. Faulds in Missoula as supervisor and contact.

Man in Jail After Hip Wound From Attempted Cabin Break In

George Trumphill was wounded in the hip by a man firing through a cabin door near north Idaho street. Chicken a Chinaman and Chicken Dick, residents, gave conflicting accounts of the incident. Trumphill, intoxicated, was arrested after receiving medical care and is jailed while police investigate.

Service Men Hold Disability Discharges Survey

Service men holding disability discharges and seeking vocational training meet Beaverhead Post board representative in Dillon today and tomorrow. William Bucher of Beaverhead Abstract office will assist. several men have already appeared before the board and others have gone to schools for vocational training.

American Legion Armistice Dance Draws Beaverhead Crowd

A large crowd filled the Beaverhead city hall for the American Legion Armistice dance in Dillon. Sunset orchestra played while Red Cross workers offered refreshments and auctioned items including a quilt, woolen socks, pillows and favors. The celebration ran late into the night with ex service men joining and a torch parade on Montana street.

Montana Southern Open For Traffic

The Montana Southern railroad from Divide to the Wise River mining district celebrated the last spike with a large crowd from Dillon Butte Anaconda and surrounding districts. The 39 mile line connects mines to modern smelting plants enabling rapid mining and a planned 500 ton mill.

Coal remains scarce in the town but immediate needs are covered. Normal College received a new supply this week with classes held in dormitories. The High School is conserving coal to the utmost.
