The state Republican convention chose delegates to Chicago and urged renomination of William Howard Taft. John D. Walter chaired the meeting with E D Weed as temporary head and F A Hazelbaker as permanent secretary. Roosevelt supporters clashed verbally but Taft supporters dominated cheers. Judge Cheadle led the Teddy push before the convening delegates.
Brigadier General Daniel H. Brush, the lone general with Civil War lineage, is retired from active duty on his 64th birthday. He served 45 years in the army and 41 as an officer, leading in the Civil Indian and Spanish wars, with commands in California and the West, including Yellowstone campaigns and actions in Cuba and the Philippines. He was born in Illinois, enlisted at 16, graduated West Point in 1867, and held notable posts from 1877 through the Spanish American War and beyond.
Mrs. Burdette Martin of near Billings is to receive a Carnegie Hero medal along with $2000 to liquidate her indebtness and a $30 monthly pension for life. The reward honors her husband who died two years ago while trying to save Miss Evan S. Wheeler in a sulphur mine after she was overcome by gas. Wheeler was rescued by a second attempt but both perished.
William H. Mikel sues Burlington Railway company under the employers liability act alleging heart strain and permanent injury while working on a bridge project for the firm. The claim seeks damages of $25,000.
W M Donohue traveling salesman for Ames Harris Neville of Portland fell from the Metlen hotel front stairs on Sunday morning. He was badly injured with a scalp wound, treated by Drs Poindexter and Bond, and remained unconscious until late evening. He plans to return to Salt Lake City when able.
Beaverhead county Republicans held a Tuesday morning convention to draft resolutions select delegates for the Livingston state convention and arrange business. Governor White chaired the opening, committees on credentials resolutions delegates and permanent organization were formed, and a slate of delegates with alternates was chosen for Livingston.
Surveyor W T George finished a detailed Beaverhead county map after three months of work. The three color map locates roads, trails, schools, ranger stations, ranches and the city of Dillon with precise boundaries. It uses red for boundaries green for National forest and dotted lines for highways and trails. Continued on Page Four.
City council in Dillon held a special session at the courthouse to address water supply and garbage disposal. The Salt Lake Elevator and Milling company petition to lay a sidetrack below the oil tanks was granted with stipulations after committee review. Bids will be invited for sidewalk and crossing construction.
During the week 14 carloads of fat cattle were shipped from the Billings Sugar company yards to the Chicago market by the David Pratt estate. The animals were the remainder of a herd of 50 sold weeks ago for 85,190. Mr Pratt was offered 10,080 for 180.08 cattle.
