Growth of American literature at century's turn

An 1900 survey surveys American literary output across fiction, biography, poetry, history, and magazines. It notes 3,626 new books by 3,000 writers in 1899, fiction leading with 932 titles, half by native authors, and rising English competition. It discusses public taste, the rise of biographies, poets' revival hopes, and the magazine and newspaper role in shaping reading habits.
