Discovery of Giant Sequoia in Sierra Nevada Frontier

A civil engineer from Los Angeles, A. H. Koebig, reports finding a Sequoia sempervirens in the U S forest reserve cellar Sierra Nevada. The tree reaches 108 feet high at one foot, 98 feet at four feet, and 93 feet at six feet, with a 250 foot wide root base and a trunk bearing cinnamon brown bark. Estimates place it as among the largest trees, potentially 2,000 years old, with cones and seeds abundant. The discovery recalls earlier work by Professor John Muir and notes the sequoias’ long lifespan, vast size, and threats from decay and vandalism.
