Dillon Group Wins Stock Judging at State FFA Meet

Beaverhead FFA won first in livestock judging at the tenth annual convention in Bozeman. John Hartwig LaRue Cantrell and Dennis Smith led the Dillon team in horse and sheep judging with Hartwig taking first in hog judging. Hartwig fourth and Cantrell seventh overall in 162 contests. Dillon received plaques and a banner, plus a trip to the Royal Livestock Show in Kansas City as state rep. Billings second Miles City third Deer Lodge fourth. Arthur Christensen won the alumni speaking contest and a trip to Portland for the western regional in May. Dillon placed sixth in poultry judging and egg grading out of 54 teams. Twin Bridges won the poultry contest. Members on the Dillon team included Roy Ames William Tait Cantrell and George Stewart who was named a state farmer. Next: continuation on page five.

Missoula Speaker Chosen for Beaverhead High School Commencement

Beaverhead county high school will honor 389 in class of 44 graduates with commencement at Normal College Auditorium Thursday night May 25. Dr. George Finlay Simmons, president of the State University at Missoula, will deliver the address.

MSNC Athletes Shine at Bozeman Relays

MS NC athletes from the Normal college excelled at the fourth annual Montana relays in Bozeman. Dillon's Davison set a javelin record at 180 ft 7 in, Hamilton tied for high jump at 6 ft 5 7/8 in, with Hamilton also placing second in broad jump. Hammer finished high jump third and javelin fourth while Schultz contributed in pole vault. Gentry of Idaho Southern won the pole vault at 12 ft 3 in.

Federation Clubs Meet Beav erhead Women Host Shakespeare Group

Beaverhead Federation of Women’s Clubs met last Saturday at the Presbyterian church with Mrs. Frank A Hazel Baker presiding. Morning talks by Miss Margaret Holloran Professor Rush Jordan and Miss Margaret Conlon highlighted a luncheon followed by a Shakespeare club program honoring Miss Lucy H Carson.

Rural Beaverhead children stage first county music festival

Rural pupils from Argenta Riverside and Blacktail schools, under Mrs Elizabeth Stanfield, will host the first Beaverhead county rural music festival in Dillon on Friday night May 5. The event, staged in Bagley school auditorium, features songs dances solos and a music memory test by the Normal College Little Symphony orchestra directed by Ralph McFadden.

Dentists to Attend Montana State Association Convention

Dr. R. D. Curry and Dr. W. J. Romersa departed Wednesday for the Montana State Dental Association convention in Livingston. Dr. Curry will preside as superintendent of district dental societies at tonight’s district representatives meeting. The convention proper opens tomorrow.

Mine Slide Fatal To Dillon Resident

Lee Woods, 46, died Tuesday at the Bon Acord dredging site on Grasshopper Creek when a bank collapsed, burying his drag-line. Oiler Ogden Hutchison and crew freed him but he died of asphyxiation. coroner to hold inquest. Woods, born 1893 in Nebraska, leaves a wife and young son and will be buried in Boise.

Ohioan Leiserson Named NLRB Nominee and Dillon Ties

William M. Leiserson of Ohio recently nominated by President Roosevelt to join the National Labor Relations Board to succeed Donald Wakefield Smith. He is acquainted with Dillon and Butte residents, is a former Wisconsin classmate of Dillon attorney John Collins, and has visited Collins home. Leiserson has been a prominent arbitrator in railroad strikes nationwide.

Beaverhead County High School bonds up for vote

Beaverhead County High School District voters face an May 20 bond election to issue 11 000 dollars for completing the new high school building. County Clerk Albert S. Baker notes May 6 is the registration deadline, with Lima district excluded from eligibility. The plan, tied to a grant from the Federal Emergency Relief Administration, would fund auditorium completion and painting, adding to a prior 9 981 dollar grant.

Wisdom Liquor Store Theft Delivers Cash and Goods

Wisdom police investigate the theft of 30 cases of liquor from the state store with $30, three coats and several hats also taken. Entry was gained by sawing off the front door lock and tire tracks show a truck used to haul away the loot. Medium priced whiskey constitutes most of the stolen alcohol. The deputy sheriff estimates the incident occurred Wednesday night and is likely ongoing.

Anaconda Clergyman Key speaker at Dillon Rotary Dinner

The Rev. Henry Kaslow of Anaconda addressed the Dillon Rotary Club last Monday recounting his harrowing escape from Russia after 1921 famine and exile. He described millions dying of starvation, three million in Russia, and his own brother among the displaced. He detailed crossing Siberia into China, ten months in China, then to San Francisco, later ordained. He warned Russia’s grand projects neglect basic daily needs. Guests included Frank Tucker and Mr. and Mrs. J. Swain of Anaconda.

June Johnson Wins High School Declam

June Johnson won the annual high school declamation contest held Thursday at the high school. She will compete in the state declamation contest at Missoula alongside finalists Jo Ann Fuller and John Carr, while William Tait was absent at high school week in Bozeman. The winning piece was a serious selection.

Dillon and Missoula battled to a fourth straight tie in the Montana Standard telegraphic trap shoot as both clubs posted perfect 75s with two Sundays left to decide the outcome. Dillon sent six shooters to 25 while Missoula had five, with Billings and Sheridan also going straight in a tight race.

College May Day Festival This Month

The Montana State Normal College will host its annual May Fete on May 12 with dances titled Dances at the Olympics and others. Dancers include Komarinskaya, Audrey Dahl, Desta Fisher, Lois Halberg, Nina McCafferty, Dorothy Lee Shelton, Dorris Minagh, Phyllis Newton, Ethel Johnson, and many more from towns such as Missoula Butte Dillon Glasgow and Hamilton. The program features Russian folk dance Mexican bullfight style dance and Highland Fling with multiple student performers and regular practice sessions ongoing.
