Paris Sketches From Grant Finch April 1919 Letter

Dr Finch details first impressions of Paris on April 4 1919 living costs and daily meals with Toan. He notes hotel seventh floor rent nine francs per person daily meals three francs breakfast ten cents Y M C A funds twenty five francs daily and Paris sights including Napoleon's tomb Invalides and Champs Elysees. He observes French etiquette fashion and children behavior, struggles with pronunciation and transport via subway, and mentions future work in Beaune with the American University in Geography. He plans to visit Clignan court and notes army control rumors and ongoing Y M C A involvement.

Court Actions and Local Arrests in Hartwig Theatre Area

Two Greek fruit stand proprietors in the Hartwig theatre building paid $10 fines for selling cigarettes without licenses. Deputy Dan Mooney pursued a fleeing man near Barratts station, recovering over $500 in furs purchased from trapper William Gray. The suspect, later named Mulford, faced forgery charges for two counterfeit checks totaling $510. Fred Hanson’s trial ended with a hung jury on a state game law violation. Seven men were arrested in a penny ante game raid. six were fined $100, one released on bonds. A marriage license was issued to Frank Anderson and Mary Ricks of Idaho, who were married by Judge Nelson and departed that night.

Victory Loan Subscriptions Lag in Beaverhead County

Beaverhead County reports only about fifty percent of its Victory Loan quota subscribed. County manager F A Hazelbaker notes many residents have not done their part and urges those who have yet to subscribe to submit by 6 pm on the 7th.

Beaverhead County 1918 Assessments Explanation Letter

County Clerk Baker’s report to the Beaverhead County Commission dated April 29 1919 explains how 1918 property valuations would differ if H B No 80 had been in effect. It notes the assessor should have listed real values in the right column for proper percentages. It states H B No 80 lacks control over the State Board and provides properties to be assessed to reach 1918 results.

Class Day 1919 Beavershead County High School Graduates

Beaverhead County High School celebrated the class of 1919 with a two act play Cupid in Khaki and a commencement in the gym. Diplomas were awarded to seventeen graduates in multiple departments and Mayor J N Gilbert gave the commencement address. The alumni reunion followed at the Andrus hotel with a welcome to veterans and a 42 star service flag noted.

Funeral held for Beaverhead soldier Ray Maurer

The late Ray Maurer, a Beaverhead county soldier who died at Fort Snelling from shell shock, was buried in Mountain View cemetery after a Sunday afternoon funeral at the Methodist church with military honors. Pall bearers were returned soldiers and nearly all local veterans attended. Rev. H. G. Humphrey led the service.

Chinese Pioneer Buried in Montana Territory

Yum Gum an early Chinese placer miner of Virginia City or Aldergulch died this week and was buried Tuesday with Chinese rites. Estimates put his age between 80 and 100 years. He was a familiar street figure, carrying a gunny stick and collecting bottles to earn a living.

Ranch Purchases 1400 Acres For 40000 In Big Hole Basin

James B Woody and Robert Woody of Jackson bought adjoining ranches owned by CL E Barnes and Arthur Wilson totaling 1400 acres in the Big Hole Basin for 40000 dollars. A Baptist church event by World Wide Guild drew a large crowd with each performer delivering a strong part. The net proceeds were reportedly satisfactory.

Robert Moore of Salmon on the way to Missoula yesterday to be with his mother who is seriously ill and receiving treatment.

McIntyre Dies at About 85 After Prolonged Cancer

J. M. McIntyre died at the poor farm Sunday morning after a protracted illness of cancer. He was about 85 years of age. Burial took place Thursday morning. Nothing is known about time.
