Citizens at a Friday caucus at city hall nominated the four present aldermen for re election on April 8. George Gosman in ward one Albert Featherly in ward two A G Williams in ward three and John T Orr in ward four were chosen unanimously. The vote reflected voter approval for past year’s city council service.
Payette Draws Crowd At Depot In Dillon
A large Dillon crowd gathered at the depot last Wednesday to glimpse Melvin Payette, the confessed slayer of Mrs Christina Wilson of Butte. Payette, in custody of Assistant Chief Jim Larkin and County Attorney Harrison Freebourne, dined in the dining car as the train halted. he showed no emotion or remarks to the onlookers.

Argenta’s early Montana silver and lead camp history
The Argenta area in Montana was an early silver and lead camp, starting with A. M. Esler’s 1865 discovery of the Legal Tender lode producing high grade ore with silver, lead, and some gold. A lead smelter followed in 1865, with ore shipments ultimately refined after railroad access. Subsequent smelter operations by ToolleLeach, the St Louis company, and others supplied by Tuscarora and Iron Mountain groups, evolving ownership and refining arrangements until 1871. The Ferdinand Brownell and related operations shipped bullion to New York banks, with ore and smelter activity shifting among firms and continuing into the Openheimer estate era.

A campaign to raise 800 to sustain at least three Boy Scout troops in this community will run April 2 to 4. The drive, organized by the local finance committee, will divide Dillon into six districts with solicitors visiting businesses to seek donations. 650 funds a field executive under the Butte area council, 150 covers local expenses.

Sheriff Orr and deputies responded to Wise River after Theodore Drooe, an elderly rancher, was found dead in his cabin by neighbors. He had not been seen for several days and friends discovered the body. Authorities indicated death was likely from natural causes.

Mrs. James Walter Scott of Armstead and Mrs. Fred Woodside of this city left Wednesday for Butter to catch a train to Helena for the annual state meeting of the Daughters of the American Revolution. They represent Beaverhead chapter as delegates. Scott is state chairman of the historic sites committee and district chairman of marking old trails. Woodside serves as state treasurer and is among the organization's most active members.

Census Takers Named for Ninth District Counts
As a preliminary to the census, JK Heslett, superintendent of the Ninth district, met in Butte and appointed six enumerators for districts in the county. The count begins April 2 and runs 80 days. residents should notify their enumerator if they will be away. Appointments include Medsker in Dillon, Spritzer, Newnes, Sprinkle, Lackey, and Mrs. Joseph T. Newnes in Dillon and Lima. Boundaries will be defined in detail later.

Early Beaverhead rancher Herman Jackson dies after brief illness
Herman Jackson a well known Beaverhead county rancher died Friday morning at the Harry Clark home after a short illness. Born in Schles Holstein Germany in 1853 he came to America in 1881 and became an early settler in Wisdom and the Big Hole basin. He leaves three sons Roy and James in Dillon and Martin in the Big Hole basin, two daughters Mrs. Ella Talent and Mrs. Jennie Edwards, and three sisters. The funeral was held Sunday at the Methodist church with interment in Mountain View cemetery.

Arm may be saved in Oregon Short Line injury
The condition of Frank P. Shu maker conductor on the Oregon Short Line who was seriously injured Friday morning last week when he fell under a moving freight car is improving gradually. His left arm, badly mangled, will undoubtedly be saved though some fingers may be lost.
