A discussion on farm efficiency argues that better machinery and factory work will cut costs more than higher bushel prices. It notes huge gains in output, urges feeding farm labor into industry, and warns about oil waste and the need for fair prices and regulation.
Four people died as a Montana flood from a Montana Power reservoir above Wise River swept through Beaverhead county. The Trueman family and Charles Ferguson were among the victims as Wise River and surrounding areas suffered extensive damage and several bridges and tracks were washed away. Rescue efforts and aid coordination followed, with local officials and residents aiding survivors and assessing losses.
A traveler from Salt Lake City reached Butte by plane after rail service to Dillon halted by the Wise River flood. The disaster left several bodies recovered or missing near Wise River, with property damage including the post office and hotels.
Floods caused by a wall of water up to 20 feet high swept through Wise River and surrounding areas Tuesday morning washing out bridges, flooding Dewey and Melrose, damaging rail lines including Oregon Short Line and Montana Southern routes, and inundating farms, cottages, and the state orphan's home grounds. Many structures and roads were destroyed or rendered unsafe.
The Waco plane owned by Walter Brown and carrying Pete LaCass of Missoula crashed near Browne's station north of Melrose. Both the pilot and passenger escaped injuries after attempting an emergency landing when the motor failed. The craft sustained a broken propeller two broken wings and other damage and will be towed to Dillon for repairs.
