Utilities face higher costs and stagnant phone rates
A table shows 1913 to 1918 cost shifts: commodities up 112 percent, wages 72 percent, while telephone rates rose only 4 percent. The note argues similar pressures hit street railways, light, power, gas and water utilities, forcing choices between higher rates, poorer service, or lower wages.
