Packing House Uncleanliness Disclosures in Chicago
Washington reports by James B. Reynolds and Charles B. Neill to Congress reveal widespread unsanitary conditions in Chicago packing houses. Wooden equipment, water soaked boards, dirty lavatories, and dirty floors foster contamination. Rest rooms are scarce and workers endure long shifts amid disease risks. The study urges mandatory post slaughter inspection and broader microscopic checks, noting inspector shortages and uninspected plants in need of regulation.
