Mrs Stamper fed a hungry tramp alone at home until Mr Hunter returned with a gun. A section foreman A A Stamper and his wife later met the intruder, Stamper punching the man and the pair escorting him up the track with the tramp fleeing after a severe beating.
The County Free High School board met at the library room last Saturday evening with Chairman G R Featherly G B Conway B F White and Miss Mac Rich present. They levied 23 mills to pay teachers wages contingent expenses for the coming year and interest on bonds totaling about 11500. A new boiler costing not over 1000 will be installed. Eight foot fence around the school grounds will be built to curb roaming cows and horses at night. The opening date for school was set.
Rev A A Luce described a large turnout for the Wisdom area funeral of James Montgomery, 37, who came from Ireland at 16. Born in Ireland, he and brother Wm. started in Iowa then Beaverhead County before settling in the Big Hole basin. The Montgomery brothers built famed ranches, and he left a Wesleyan Methodist heritage with family in Butte and Chicago.
Miss Winifred Coleman of Miles City died in Brainard hospital after an operation for tumor following studies at Dillon State Normal and St Peters. An eldest daughter of James and Margaret Coleman she was 21, a devout Catholic and former choir member, with two terms at Dillon Normal and a teaching stint at Stacy.
Deputy Game Warden Henry Avare and Deputy Sheriff Ike Edinger arrested Thomas and Maggie Warner and Frank Bassett for killing sage hens during a camping trip near Wm. Lenkersdorfer ranch. Thomas Warner pled guilty and paid a $25 fine. Maggie Warner and Frank Bassett were discharged after a hearing before Justice of the Peace High in Dillon.
Beaverhead county commissioners met as a board of equalization reviewing reductions for several properties and settling bids. They rejected Venora Metlen’s request, granted Newton and Meade hotel and Mooney land reductions, and taxed sheep found unassessed. Bids for Hot Springs road went to M C Harrison and county mining property sold to B F White for sixty dollars. The jail contract was approved and settlement arranged. The board adjourned to August 8 for tax levies.
Beaverhead County wool season closes with last shipment from Dillon last Saturday. Total figures for 1904 show 57 cars 4,906 bags and 1,460,203 pounds valued at 216,069.67 dollars, higher price despite smaller yield versus 1902 and 1903. Counties woolgrowers generally pleased though some believe better prices could have been reached by waiting.
The board of trustees of public school district No 10 met last Friday and levied 2 mills on all taxable property to raise about 2800 dollars. The funds complement state school funds to run the school for the coming year. A bills list was approved and a committee was named to oversee repairs to school grounds and building.
A lawn tennis club named East Side Tennis club was formed this week with ten members: O. M. Best, Dr. B. W. Miller, A. L. Stone, Floyd Beat, A. R. Jacobs, J. F. Tattersall, O. B. Starr, Ray B. Conger, Dr. M. A. Walker and Will W. Simpson. The court will be on J. F. Bishop’s lot between Beaverhead stables and Mrs. Y. Grace’s boarding house as workmen level the ground.
Brakeman Frank Holland narrowly survived a deadly incident in the Dillon work train yards on a noon shift. While coupling cars carrying heavy steel rails for the Short Line project, rails extended over the ends trapped his head between them and caused two scalp wounds. Had the rails protruded another inch he would have been killed.
A speechy feature recounts Conductor Gosman aiding Greek workers by shooting five jackrabbits after the crew spotted a jack. It notes gossip that Gosman’s actions caused a railroad strike this morning, while praising his readiness to help when duties allow.
The Short Line work train sits idle in Dillon as Foreman Carson dismisses one Greek worker who refused rail unloading duties. Twenty seven Greeks join the slowdown and refuse to work, shouting time check. They will depart for Poca tonight.
Charles Collins a bronco rider is charged with assault with a deadly weapon after a confrontation with Pat Laden. Collins says Laden attacked him with a club then Collins grabbed a shotgun and fired. Laden fled. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for next Monday at 10 am with attorney Henry R. Melton.
The Sunday school children of the Methodist Church enjoyed their annual picnic at Belway Park. They traveled by spring wagons and buggies with teachers and church members, enjoyed a abundant meal in the pavilion with ice cream and cake, then returned to town weary but happy. Dr. W. O. Orr spent part of his week in Deer Lodge.
Work crews place 80 pound steel rails along the Short Line between Dillon and Glen in the past week. Conductor Gosman of Lima oversees the operation as heavier track replaces lighter rails in key sections, reviving questions about route changes and potential losses for Dillon.
