Sheridan Landmark To Be Destroyed In 1940

One of the few Sheridan landmarks, the Schultz hotel built in 1873, will be razed after Fred Jenkins of Twin Bridges acquires the property. He plans a new oil station on the site, leaving only two old west Main Street buildings.

Dillon Plans for Commercial Club Meeting

An invitation extends to Butte Chamber of Commerce members and secretary Willard Thompson to Dillon Friday night to discuss forming a Dillon chamber of commerce. Organizers aim to unite civic leaders, promote business growth, and advance Southern Montana interests at the city hall meeting.

John C Collins Elected Beaverhead Mining President

John C Collins was elected president of the Beaverhead Mining Association at its annual meeting held Tuesday night in Dillon. Ralph Smith was named vice president Roy Herndon secretary and Joe C Fuller treasurer. The board of directors was retained. The group invited the Montana State Mining Association to plan its 1938 Dillon meeting and arrange a visit to the Virginia City gathering on August 7 to persuade a Dillon meeting next year.

County Men Attend Bozeman PCA Meeting

Frank A. Hazelbaker Parke T. Scott and H. B. Sager returned from Bozeman where they attended the Montana Production Credit Association regional conference for board members and secretary-treasurers held June 30 and July 1. Scott remained for All Montana day with a historic parade review lasting ninety minutes.

Indians Invited to Wisdom Picnic by Big Hole Historian

JW V McWhorter, authority on early Big Hole history, will speak at the Old Timers picnic in Wisdom next Sunday. Two Indian braves who fought at the Big Hole will mark battlefield spots and relate tales of early history. A large crowd is expected with several from Dillon already planning to attend.

Rain Halts Forest Fire Threat Near Wise River

A fire in the Wise River area started Sunday, likely from lightning, was controlled Monday as heavy rains swept the region and 50 CCC boys from Birch Creek camp aided patrols. Beaverhead forest official L R Vanairsdale reports about 25 CCC members remained on duty late Monday.

Landscaping at Post Office Completed

Landscaping of the post office grounds was completed Thursday by contractor Harry E. Miller. New lawn seeded with Kentucky blue grass and clover. Seventy-two Japanese Barberry shrubs form a hedge, fifty-four Russian Olive shrubs planted, and forty-six Pfitzer juniper evergreens placed in front. Two corners will receive Paul scarlet hawthornes in fall. Mrs. Edward Himrod of Hawaii visits Miss Jean Bishop.

Revamped team rallies to edge Butte 3 2 in tight win

Dillon's revamped squad engineered a three run fourth inning to overcome Butte 3 2. Floyd Vandegrift scattered Butte hits and drove in a fourth inning run with a timely single. Phelan and Spear sparked Butte's early scoring with a first inning single and a third inning double. Roesti scored on a fielder’s choice play to end Butte’s threats as manager Pat Kenny protested a dead ball ruling in the seventh.

Dillon Bride Louise McGee Weds Archie Green in Livingston

On June 27 at the Livingston Methodist church Archie Green of Dillon and Louise McGee of Livingston united in marriage. The ceremony was followed by a reception at the bride’s parents’ home and a motor trip to Yellowstone Park before settling in Dillon.

Dillon Youth Dies in California Bus Crash

Dillon youth Lewis Anson Gilman aged 20 was killed when a chartered bus carrying 22 Navy men tipped over near King City California on July 4. He lived in Dillon before joining the Navy and served as a first class seaman. Funeral services set for Thursday at 2:30 pm Brundage Chapel with interment at Mountain View cemetery.

Beaverhead County Sees Sparse Independence Day Accidents

Beaverhead county reported only a few minor mishaps during Independence Day celebrations. Leon Millers truck plunged into six feet of water and was buried in a barrow pit but the driver escaped with slight injuries. A second crash near Red Rock involved Floyd Kenison’s car leaving the highway into a ditch with no injuries. Ted Smith from Butte reported rear ending a Utah-registered vehicle.
