Forest Notes and Timber Prospects
The forest service reports 40000 pounds of tree seed collected and about 30000 acres reforested last year. A promising turpentine industry may develop in the west and southwest from resinous gum of western yellow pine. German pencil makers eye California incense cedar for pencil wood and a pencil factory in California seems likely. Over 120 million board feet of timber was given away to settlers and miners near national forests. Sugar maple is the most valuable maple species. Overgrazed stock ranges can recover under regulated grazing, faster than if unused.
