School Again in Full Blast in Rochester Town

Rochester, Jan 8. School opened after two weeks of vacation with larger attendance as several new families moved in. Not an empty house in town. Mrs. Wm. Morrow left for Butte after visiting her daughter Mrs. Frank Taylor. Other local movements include Mrs. Nelson returning to Butte and Charles Palmer visiting his Rochester uncle Joe Appel. Frank Scherrer spent two days at Twin Bridges.

Oil Strike Rumor Spurs Town Mood Near Smallhorn Canyon

Last Saturday villagers heard that Montana Oil and Fuel Co. struck oil at 225 feet though seepage caused the find. Clay bands caused the drill to drift and the crew halted work to casing the well with inch iron casing. Drilling will resume once the casing in place, with a hoped depth around 600 feet.

Buggy Ride Ends in Narrow Escape on Montana Street

Prof F L Lewis with Miss Elisabeth Hawley and Miss Bertha Huntsman rode toward Selway's park when a resident threw water from a Japs house startling the horses. Lewis was thrown as wheels passed over him. Hawley steered toward a fence and saved the women from injury though Huntsman sprained a thumb. One horse was badly injured and the buggy wrecked.

The first Beaverhead county Farmers Institute convened at the courthouse with three sessions. Judge Melton opened morning proceedings as Senator J. P. Murray spoke on grain raising and Prof. Shaw of Montana Agricultural College discussed grasses and livestock feeding strategies.

Clark Republicans Meet in Secret Session in Helena

O F Goddard of Billings led Clark Republican leaders in a secret Helena gathering Monday night to plan a protest against presidential appointments named by the state Republican central committee and opposed to nominees favored by Senator Carter. Speakers included E O Russell C W Wiley Judge Sterling George Heldt and others while a telegram to President Roosevelt and resolutions were drafted.
