Postal Savings Bank Bill Aimed At Thrift For All Americans
Washington reports Senator Thomas H. Carter of Montana introduced a postal savings bill designed to promote thrift. The plan would open postal savings offices in money order and designated post offices, allow deposits from any person including wives, and require a minimum initial deposit of one dollar with 10 cent stamps for smaller entries. Interest would be two percent annually, capped at one thousand dollars per depositor, with funds invested in U.S. bonds or state bonds. Deposits would be protected from demand or seizure and weekly transfers to treasury accounts would fund the postal savings system.
