The Beaverhead County Board of Commissioners appointed J. H. Gilbert W. S. Tash and Pearl Smith to a two year term on the high school board and reappointed Robert Barrett James Mansfield and C. E Blinn for the ensuing year.
Residents report a bright pair of sun dogs connected by a dim ring around the sun on a Tuesday afternoon. A rainbow appeared surrounding the outer circle, forming a rare and beautiful daytime celestial display observed by locals.
Thieves gained entry Tuesday night by sawing bars and breaking glass at the state liquor store, taking a quantity of liquor. The inventory will determine exact amount. the safe appears untouched and no other items were stolen.
Maggie McGeehee received a sentence of 80 days and William Pinkerton six months in Judge Stahl's court on Monday for disturbing the peace. Both sentences were suspended.
Mrs. Margaret J. Roberts a former Dillon resident died at her Alhambra California home last Wednesday. The body was brought to Dillon for burial beside her husband William Roberts. Funeral services were held Saturday at Brundage chapel with Rev. J A Meeke officiating and interment followed Monday at Mountain View cemetery. She was 67, a native of Ohio who moved to the county about 40 years ago and lived on a ranch near Dillon until her husband’s death.
Andrew Shutte aged 51 at his ranch home two miles north of town died from a heart attack early Monday. A resident for years he is survived by his wife Lucy Spehar, four stepchildren and two brothers in Michigan. Funeral was held Wednesday at 10 at St Rose Catholic Church.
In a tight game at Butte the Montana Miners edged the Normal Bulldogs 27 to 21 with 1 ½ minutes left. Normal led 10-9 at halftime and tied 21-21 late in the final period before three underbasket baskets by Montana sealed the win.
The Dillon Boxing Club hosts a benefit event next Saturday at Dart’s Hall featuring headliner Jack McLenegan vs Louie Bell. Clarence Burgess faces Buz Reichle, Bob Hoffman meets Cowboy Swetish, Curley Reese vs Jim Daniels, Speed Crawford vs Kid O’Zymski, with two curtain-raisers for junior exhibitors. Louie Bell trains hard aiming to avenge defeats of Curly Reese. ladies admitted free with escorts.
Dave Thomas of the board of five underwriters and American La France reps HE. E. Albright and Wm. G. Brooks oversaw a 600 gallon per minute fire pump test in Dillon despite 25 below zero. The test exceeded expectations, proving Dillon’s equipment is second to none for its population size. Lambert Bliel and E. W. Bond traveled to Helena last Friday to attend a meeting of the Associated Merchants of Montana.
Norman S Gilbert longtime Madison county rancher and Dillon native born June 28 1883 died after a lingering illness Survived by widow Naomi Gilbert of St Bernard Louisiana a son Norman 8 Jr three brothers J H W G and Thomas E and two sisters Mrs George M Gosman of Dillon and Mrs Minnie G LeKander of Chicago Funeral at St James Episcopal Church with Rev H N Tragitt officiating and burial at Mountain View Cemetery. Mrs Gilbert traveled by plane to St Paul then rail to reach the city.
K D Fleck chaired the Dillon Rotary meeting where Miss Violet Eastman spoke on the legal and economic status of women from ancient times to today. She cited barriers in professions, home-making roles, family property laws, and issues like sweat shop conditions and starvation wages. Kampus Kadets from State Normal College performed a skit “Music Goes Round and Round,” a reprise of the college’s prior “Yodvil.”
A survey shows 14 438 farm families in Montana Colorado and Wyoming were on relief two years ago and are now paying their way out under the resettlement administration rehabilitation program. Region Ten includes about 182 224 farm families with 50 672 in Montana. About 8 000 in Montana may receive aid to buy equipment feed livestock seed and other farm necessities to operate on good land.
The Seattle recruiting office invites applications for qualified young men to enlist on March 2 and be sent to the San Diego recruit depot. Applicants must be 18 to 25 years old, physically fit, and between 66 and 72 inches tall. Write to Room 433, Federal Building, Seattle for details.

Ruth Phelps of Deer Lodge to represent MSNC at Dr Finlay Simmons University of Montana inauguration on Feb 16. Twenty five Kampus Kadets drive to Butte to boost Mines Normal basketball pep. Transportation arranged by faculty and students.
Henrietta Crockett, secretary of the state tuberculosis association, arrived to oversee skin tuberculosis tests for high school students. The test reaction appears in 48 hours and those with reactions will have X rays. Statistics cite tuberculosis as a leading teen killer in 1984 Montana, second only to the flu among communicable diseases.
Beaver Head post of the American Legion celebrates a record ahead of last year with membership surpassing prior totals. Ex servicemen invited to a 7 pm meeting at Andirus hotel to learn bonus application steps. dinner 50 cents. About 100 county applications have been filed, with average cash value over $600 per veteran, about $100 above the national estimate. A Lima dance scheduled for Feb 22 was postponed due to scarlet fever restrictions.
Beavorhead residents faced a record setting cold when the temperature plunged from above freezing to 31 below zero after a Thursday front. Ranchers reported livestock suffering though losses were few. bus service paused, trains delayed, and planes made emergency landings as utilities strained and repairs continued.
Monty Holmes pleaded guilty in district court to forgery. Judge Lyman H. Bennett sentenced him to two years in the state prison. Holmes, who reportedly has five prior convictions, was taken to Deer Lodge by Deputy Pat Flynn after the ruling for allegedly passing a worthless check at the Montana Mercantile Company.
Courthouse offices Dillon banks and the state liquor store closed Wednesday in observance of Lincolns birthday. National holiday operations paused with flags displayed on lamp posts in business districts to honor the occasion.
The Dillon Boy Scouts marked anniversary week by attending the Methodist church and thanking the minister and church officials for their invitation and supporting address on Abraham Lincoln. A court of honor at City Hall awarded Star and First Second Class badges and merit badges to a list of scouts, followed by a father and son banquet at the Methodist church.
Peter Cook, a rancher from the southern county, was committed to the Warm Springs state institution Saturday after a complaint of harassing neighboring ranchers. He was escorted to the facility the same day by Undersheriff C. E. Blinn and Deputy Pat Flynn, reportedly resisting during capture. Meanwhile, Mrs. Otto Schulz of Sheridan and Mrs. Frank Schulz of Twin Bridges were shopping in Dillon last week.
Beaverhead county wool exhibit, supplied by local growers, won second place at the state mool show held during the Montana sheepmen convention in Bozeman. County Agent Bernard Williams reports fleeces came from Whitworth & Sons Kennedy & Kennedy Roscoe Cornell Stanley Sisterson Ralph Jorgenson and the Cook Sheep Co.
