Fort Worth soldier Ned Lawrence confronts a bleak fate
In 1870 Fort Worth, Ned Lawrence, once a favored staff officer, is declared supernumerary and discharged with one year’s pay. His old friends Brooks and Frazier try to help as he grapples with debt, disgrace, and a fight to clear his name while caring for Ada and her child. Lawrence plans a final bid to Washington to overturn the order, facing a looming clash with Barclay, the man set to replace him, as the garrison watches.
